The #1 Characteristic of Super
Successful HR People
by Alan L. Collins
Donald Trump is
right. The number one characteristic of super successful people in
business is their willingness and ability to act decisively.
And, this applies to super successful HR people as well.
The best
organizations
want strong, decisive HR leaders calling the shots at all levels of their
organization. They want decisive
department HR
Managers leading their field organizations; decisive HR Directors at their
headquarters operations; and strong Chief HR Officers at leading
their businesses at the top. With this sort of HR capability in place
at all levels, the top firms ensure that great decisions about people are being
made at all corners of the organization. The
best HR folks think carefully about complex decisions involving people, get
counsel from others when necessary, but then make these decisions quickly. They
then discipline
themselves to take action and to carry out the decisions they have made. If they found
they have made a mistake, they step back, self-correct and try something
else. Unsuccessful
HR people are indecisive. And frankly, it is easy to sometimes lose sight
of the fact that you're a lot better than you may give yourself credit
for. One
boss I worked for put it very bluntly to me. He told me that in HR if
you're not prepared to look the CEO in the eye without blinking and tell them
that the "X HR decision I've made is the right for the
business," then you will get your butt kicked and sent to the showers
early. Now
there is a difference between decisiveness and impulsiveness. And that
difference is information, experience and track record. If you react
quickly, but without facts or reason, that's impulsive. React quickly with
your facts and rationale, now that's decisiveness. HR
clients, colleagues and CEOs prefer to do business with very confident
individuals. And, when
you become decisive and action oriented, you shift your entire HR career into a
higher gear. You get far more done in a day than other people. You
move ahead faster than the other people around you. And you actually tap
into a higher source of energy, enthusiasm and inspiration that fills you with
joy and exhilaration.
