Putting The “Human” in Human Resources

Yesterday’s article on the importance of “giving first” reminded me of a presentation I attended several years ago. Richard Carlson, author of numerous books, the most famous of which was Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, was giving a lecture in front of a packed house. I don’t remember much about his talk…except one thing. It happened to be the simplest suggestion he made, the one that required the smallest change.

That suggestion was….to try every single day to make a difference in someone else’s life.

It reminded me that In HR, each day lots of people cross our path: colleagues, clients, managers, employees, customers, suppliers, consultants and others that give us the opportunity to touch them in a positive way. We can impact them by doing simple things like offering:
-a kind word.
-a special favor
-positive acknowledgment of a promotion they’ve just received.
-a simple smile
-a listening ear
-an open mind
-a receptive heart
-a shoulder
-encouragement
-belief in them and their ideas, goals and dreams
-tough love

There is more that could be added to this list, but I’m sure I’ve made my point.

In HR, you may never know how a kind word from you at just the right moment or a little encouragement in times of discouragement that someone may face can have a tremendous long-term impact on the rest of their life…and to the success of your organization.

When we try to make a difference, even on a very small scale, it can be extremely satisfying and nourishing to you as well. As you think back on your day, you’ll realize that you made a positive difference in the of another human being.

Sometimes your efforts are acknowledged and appreciated; other times they are not. Doesn’t matter. All that matters is that you know and that you get the positive feelings that result.

What small thing can you say or do to make a difference in someone’s life today?
